Medicinal Uses

The root is sweet; cures fevers due to 'tridosha', pain in the abdomen, palpitation of the heart, urinary troubles, hypochondiasis, and melancholia. It is laxative and febrifuge when fresh (Ayurveda) (HinduNet Inc., 2003). Root and bark cures intermittent fever. Leaves are used in the treatment of ophthalmic diseases. Water extract obtained from leaves is used in catarrhs and fever. Immature fruit of the plant is good to cure chronic diarrhoea and dysentery as it is an astringent, stomachic and digestive in nature. The syrup prepared from fruit pulp of the plant is good in dyspepsia. Sur et al. (1999 & 2002) observed and reported the antispermatogenic activity of leaves of this plant. Bael tree has shown antiviral activity against coxsackie viruses B1-B6. Badam et al. (2002) reported that the extract of various parts of the plant has shown significant activity against the virus. Shobha and Thomas (2001) studied anti diarrhoeal activity of this plant. According to them, unripe fruit of Aegle marmelos was effective against castor oil induced diarrhoea. This plant is good in type 2 diabetes (Saxena & Vikram, 2004; Sabu & Kuttan, 2004). This plant is highly effective against various microbes and can be used as a good antimicrobial agent (Rusia & Srivastava, 1988). It has show good anti-inflammatory effects (Udupa et al., 1994).

Veterinary Uses

Hameed (1998) reported that two fruits of Aegle marmelos once or twice daily can cure foot and mouth disease.
