Medicinal Uses

It produces arrhythmia and hypertension (Hamet, 1954). Root is bitter, tonic, digestive, alleviates dysentery and bilious complaints. It is good in periodic and intermittent fevers, useful in diarrhoea and vomiting in children. The dried root is analgesic, antiinflammatory, antiperiodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cholagogue and febrifuge (Mehra & Puri, 1968; Kirtikar & Basu, 1935; Ukani et al., 1996; Uniyal & Uniyal, 2002). It is used in India in the treatment of dyspepsia, diarrhoea and coughs. In the indigenous system of medicine this plant is considered a valuable febrifuge and a bitter tonic especially in combating debility after malaria and other fevers. The roots are considered as good remedy in the treatment of hysteria, and throat diseases. It is also used as astringent and prescribed in diarrhoea, dyspepsia, vomiting and cough. The root is also considered anti-diabetic and very efficacious for irritability of stomach and in abdominal pains. It is also used in Tibetan medicine as a cooling potency. It is used to treat poisoning from scorpion or snake bites, the fevers of contagious diseases and inflammation of the intestines (Sharma et al., 1963; Shah & Yadava, 1970).
