Medicinal Uses

The bark is powerful astringent, tonic and used in the teratment of inflammation of the eye in China. In Brazil the leaves are used as a maturant. In the West Indies and in Central and South America the green fruit is considered as an antidysenteric and an anthelmintic. Its bark has astringent properties (Rai Chaudhuri, 1963). The fruit is anthelmintic, antidysentric. Leaves and seed have insecticidal properties. The leaf decoction is given as a vermifuge. For treatment of boils, abscesses and ulcers, rushed leaves or a paste of the flesh is applied as poultice. The unripe fruit is dried, pulverized and employed against diarrhoea and dysentery. The bark is also taken for this purpose. Fragments of the root bark are used in toothache. The root decoction is taken as a febrifuge.

Veterinary Uses

Leaves are placed in the poultry shelter to prevent lice attack (Karuppayee , 2002).
